• Ideal for Alignment and Machine Vision Applications
• Multiple Fan Angles Available
• Creates Uniform, Straight Line
Optimized for a 0,8 mm diameter laser beam input, our Powell Lenses, also known as Laser Line Generator
Lenses, convert laser beams into uniform, straight lines. Unlike cylindrical lenses, which generate Gaussian
beam profiles with hot-spot center points and fading edges, Powell Lenses provide an even distribution of
energy along the length of the entire line.
Molded Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CPCs)
• Ideal for Concentrating Solar Energy
• 2,5 and 5 mm Exit Diameters
• 45˚ Acceptance Angle
Molded Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CPCs) are designed to efficiently collect and concentrate distant
light sources. These CPCs have a large acceptance angle of 45° and two output diameter sizes, enabling them to
accommodate a variety of light sources and receiver configurations. A flange around the input diameter facilitates
easy mounting in benchtop optical systems as well as integration into OEM systems. Molded Compound
Parabolic Concentrators (CPCs) are critical components in solar energy collection, wireless communication, biomedical
and defense research, LiDAR, or for any applications requiring condensing of a divergent light source.

TECHNICAL NOTE
Compound Parabolic Concentrators
Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CPC’s) are non-imaging optics used to
efficiently collect and concentrate light. They are typically used for solar collection,
wireless communication, and biomedical and defense research, but
can be used in any illumination application that requires light concentration.
When a reflective parabolic surface is revolved about an axis as shown
below, a parabolic concentrator is formed. This configuration allows for a
wide acceptance angle of light from distant sources and can increase the
intensity from a variety of sources and configurations.
The light that is concentrated by
the CPC is limited by the acceptance
angle (θmax) of the optic.
Incident light that makes an angle
smaller than the acceptance
angle will be concentrated, while
light making a larger angle will be
reflected back out of the system.
The length of a hollow CPC is determined by the acceptance angle, as well
as the diameters of the large aperture (d1) and small aperture (d2):
Length =
d1 + d2
2 x tan(θmax)
Also, the ratio of the diameters is related to the maximum acceptance angle by:
d1
=
d2 sin(θmax)
To calculate these parameters for solid CPCs, the index of refraction of the
concentrator (n) needs to be taken into account. Using Snell’s law, the acceptance
angle must be modified by:
θ’max = sin−1
n
The solid molded CPCs offered by Edmund Optics® are made of B270,
which has an index of refraction of 1,523.
