TECHNICAL NOTE
Conventional diffuse backlights are often used in manufacturing environments,
where applications demand that objects be inspected and measured.
Often, the profile of an opaque object can be checked for size,
irregularities, or defects simply by passing it in front of a backlight and
processing the image with a vision system. However, as the required measurement
accuracies become more demanding, care must be taken in selecting
the appropriate illumination.
Standard backlights have several limitations: They must be larger than
the object under inspection to cover the entire object’s surface and create a
profile. They must also be diffuse so as to avoid hot spots, intensity roll-off
off near the edges, and other illumination errors. These properties force
the backlight to emit light at angles from 0 to nearly 180 degrees. When
the very high angle rays are emitted from the outer edges of the backlight,
light glances off the edge of the object under inspection and reflects into
the camera lens. This causes the object to be illuminated, rather than silhouetted,
which reduces contrast in the image (see diagram below).
A Telecentric backlight directs light emitted from a source onto the object
with very small deviations in ray angles. Since there is no angle between
these rays, light enters the camera lens directly, rather than by stray reflections,
creating high contrast images (see diagram below). What’s more,
the volume of light available with a telecentric backlighting configuration
increases dramatically. A conventional backlight is diffuse and much of
the light never reaches the object. The telecentric backlight is directional,
ensuring much more light reaches its target. Typical applications will see
a 3-5 times decrease in shutter speed at the same aperture with this backlight
over a standard diffuse backlight.
Standard Diffuse Backlight Telecentric Backlight
• Optically Collimated Light for Increased Edge Contrast
• Superior Collimation Ideal for use with Telecentric Lenses
• Easily Compatible with 8 mm Coaxial LEDs or ¼" (0,312") Fiber Light Guides
TECHSPEC® Telecentric Backlight Illuminators use the optical design principle of telecentricity to illuminate
objects with truly collimated light and produce high contrast, silhouetted images. Standard backlights are diffuse
to avoid hot spots, but these diffuse reflections can also reduce edge contrast. TECHSPEC® Telecentric
Backlight Illuminators have collimated light rays (not diffuse) to increase edge contrast, thereby increasing
measurement accuracy. Used in combination with a telecentric imaging lens, these illuminators are ideal for
machine vision applications that require accurate measurements and are compatible with 8 mm coaxial LEDS
or ¼” (0,312”) fiber optic light guides. Note: Additional light source and light source power supply required
for operation.

• Multiple Wavelength Options Available
• Equip C-Mount Imaging Lenses to Control Illumination Geometry
• Ideal for 3D Reconstruction and Mapping
Advanced Illumination LED Pattern Projectors are compact illuminators designed for applications requiring
structured illumination. Advanced Illumination LED Pattern Projectors can be used with any C-mount compatible
imaging lens and negatively patterned 21 mm reticle to achieve specific structured illumination geometries.
When used without a reticle, Advanced Illumination LED Pattern Projectors can be adjustable spot lights.
Note: Required power supply and C-mount imaging lens are sold separately.
