Types of Lenses
CYLINDER LENSES
Cylinder lenses have one fl at and one cylindrical surface. They can have either positive or negative focal lengths.
They are typically used to focus incoming light to a line, or to change the aspect ratio of an image.
In order to make our lenses easier to integrate into OEM assemblies, Edmund Optics® has
improved a variety of our standard tolerances. These changes were specifi cally designed to
facilitate “drop in” assemblies, eliminating the need for complicated assembly procedures
including active alignment. The precision specifi cation changes were made through process
improvements at our world class spherical manufacturing facilities in Japan, Singapore, and
the USA, where EO produces millions of lenses annually. The improved specifi cations implemented
include:
Diameter Tolerance: All of our TECHSPEC® spherical lenses, regardless of size, are now
held to a diameter tolerance of +0,000/-0,025 mm. Maintaining the diameter to within 25
μm ensures the lenses will seat and align accurately within a well-designed barrel assembly.
Centration: All of our TECHSPEC® singlet lenses with a focal length >10 mm now feature
a centration of <1 arcminute. This precision alignment of the optical axis ensures the lenses
can be used in demanding imaging applications.
Surface Quality: All of our TECHSPEC® spherical lenses, regardless of size, are now held
to a scratch-dig value of 40-20. This precision cosmetic specifi cation ensures the lenses can
be used in demanding laser-based applications.

BALL AND SPECIALTY LENSES
Ball lenses are polished spheres of glass with a short, positive focal length. They are commonly used in fi ber coupling,
endoscopy, bar code scanning, and as pre-forms for molded aspherical lenses. Other specialty lenses have
specifi c applications mentioned in the notes.

How to Specify Edge Blackened Optics
Any of our lenses with a diameter of 5 mm or greater can be specifi ed with blackened edges.
To specify the blackening, simply append a -INK to the BBAR coated stock number. For
example, to order a 10 mm diameter, 15 mm focal length, VIS 0° coated achromatic lens with
blackened edges, the stock number would be #63-705-INK.
